That looks like the MCD12Q1 Land Cover type. Type one is the IGBP: https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/dataset_discovery/modis/modis_products_table/mcd12q1 As of right now it is available in Version 51 and from year 2001 through 2013. Within the next couple of months Version 6 willbecome available and it should be current through 2017, it is a yearly product. The following is our Data Pool site for the MCD12Q1: https://e4ftl01.cr.usgs.gov/MOTA/MCD12Q1.051/
The format is HDF-EOS. So need tools that will work with that format: http://hdfeos.org/software/tool.php

MODIS (or Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) is a key instrument aboard NASA's Terra (EOS AM) and Aqua (EOS PM) satellites. Terra's orbit around the Earth is timed so that it passes from north to south across the equator in the morning, while Aqua passes south to north over the equator in the afternoon. GLCF provides access to imagery collected from the Terra MODIS sensor, in a product that is a composite of sixteen days worth of images. This composite has the benefit of eliminating most cloud cover found in daily images. Note: the Collection 3, 32-day composites will remain online until replaced by the Collection 4 and Collection 5 edition, 16-day composites.
